This is a recording of the free online webinar which was hosted by PrepAdviser on 5 April, 2018. It focused on Universita Cattolica’s MSc in Global Business Management. An overview of the webinar follows.

Different types of degrees

There are many pathways to take in postgraduate study, and being aware of the differences will help you select the right one and make the most of your academic experience. Specifically, for Master’s degrees, there are two types which differ from each other mainly in their teaching method— the MA uses a liberal approach and a varied curriculum including a balance of writing, class debates and projects. The MSc, on the other hand, is highly structured, focuses on theory and places a greater emphasis on research and reading.

Cattolica’s Master of Science in Global Business Management requires a lot of work, is academically challenging, but implementing internships and practical work within the two years makes the experience more dynamic. Professor Emanuele Vendramini explains that his students usually take two internships, which really enables them to gain a global perspective on various business practices. They are offered support finding a placement, as well as close support during regular office hours. Meanwhile, on campus, the classes are capped at seventy students, offering individual-focused teaching.

Our classes are not structured entirely on teaching, but a combination of case studies and guest speakers, so they are very interactive.

Learning a new language

Even though English is considered a global language, and many universities offer programmes in English, you should make an effort to speak the language of the country you study in if you have plans on working there after completing your degree. With Cattolica’s campuses in Milan, Piacenza, Rome, and Cremona, you also have the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the Italian culture, as well as increase your networking skills while narrowing your career objectives. Finally, it might help you to finance your tuition by working part-time.

Public or private?

Amongst several other factors used in your search to determine the right school, you might be wondering whether you would consider postgraduate study at a public or private university is the better option. The main advantage of public B-schools is the lower tuition fees. On the other hand, choosing to study at a private university will enable you to experience smaller class sizes, greater geographical diversity, and adherence to a particular academic focus.

Aishah Pathak, Senior Officer at the International Recruitment Office at Universita Cattolica, explains:

Being private, allows the school to offer a certain amount of services to international students that most public universities struggle with.

This makes a complex procedure more facilitative and includes application guidance, consulting, getting visa support, and accommodation support and on-campus orientation.

Making the decision to study for a Master’s degree is an important step towards building a successful career, and knowing that you have unconditional support from the university lends reassurance that you are on the right path.
