The Writing Task 1 of the IELTS Academic Test requires you to write a summary of at least 150 words to describe a particular graph, table, chart, or process. This task tests your ability to select and report the main features, to describe and compare data, identify significance and trends in factual information, or describe a process.
The video aims at helping you understand how the IELTS Writing Task 1 is marked and what is needed to achieve a Band 9, the highest score indicating that the test-taker has fully operational command of the language.
Criteria
Each writing task is assessed by examiners according to the following four criteria:
- Task achievement – refers to how well you have answered the question and also assesses if the information in your answer is relevant, accurate and correct, using the minimum of 150 words.
- Coherence and Cohesion – Coherence refers to the flow of your writing. Your ideas should be logically organised and appropriately sequenced into paragraphs. Cohesion assess whether you have used appropriate linking words to connect ideas and show the relationship between paragraphs, sentences or parts of sentences.
- Lexical Resource – This refers to the range of vocabulary you have used in your writing and how accurate and appropriate it is for the specific task.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy – This focuses on the range of grammar structures you have used in your writing and how accurate your grammar is.
Example
After elaborating on the assessment criteria, the video shows a task describing the four stages of a process, and then an answer that fully covers the requirements of the task with all key features of each stage of the process presented clearly and correctly. What follows then is a dissection of the answer with the aim of helping you understand why it achieved the highest possible score.
