Quick Facts:

  • Finding the root cause of what is making you unhappy in your current career will help you either fix the situation and remain in your present field, or help you realize that the best option is to try a new career path.
  • Evaluating both the positives and negatives of switching career is an important step in making the right decision. Making a pros and cons list will illuminate things for you and help you prepare for any disappointments that may arise.
  • Creating an action plan of how to go about changing your career may take a while, but is worth the effort and is more likely to result in a successful transition. Reach Ivy adds:

Chosen Quote:

You need to ask yourself the ‘How’ – “How am I going to go about changing my career?” The answer is never straightforward, and it is unlikely to ever be so. Career changing has the potential to change your life, and you need to have an action plan. For instance, if you aim to get into the culinary arts after 5 years in a corporate analyst job, there are several other things you need to consider. Will you start your own bakery? If yes, where will the capital come from? Do you have a business plan? It’s only after sorting these things out that a career shift will prove fruitful. After asking yourself these questions, if you arrive at the decision, it is time to act.

Useful Information:

  • Taking rash decisions thoughtlessly, like quitting your job when you identify a problem, without having a plan for what follows, will only make things harder down the road. Try to remain rational and levelheaded, despite the challenges ahead.
