There are two criteria you need to focus on when developing your career goals.

  1. You actually want to pursue this career
  2. Your target school can help you achieve your goal.

What to consider

You need to look introspectively and decide what it is you want to do with your life that is fulfilling. Is there something that is calling to you? Is there a path that makes you happiest? These are the things you need to consider when developing your goals.

You need to break these out into both short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals can provide the skills that you will need in order to reach your long-term goals.

Do your research

As with anything, you need to conduct thorough research. You need to understand whether this career is in fact what you think it is on the surface. You also need to determine if you have the skill set for this career. If the answer is no, you need to be sure that this school will give you the skills you need. If the career is a non-traditional one for an MBA, you need to be able to explain in your essays and interviews why this program is going to help you reach your goals.
