What Is the Best Time to Take the GMAT? (Video)

What Is the Best Time to Take the GMAT? (Video)

In an edition of Morgan’s Timeout with Trav series, he answers a question from a college senior. Morgan points out that the GMAT score is valid for 5 years, so his recommendation to college seniors is to take the GMAT now while they are still in school or straight after graduating, but before stepping into the professional world. Why? Even though they may feel that they have their hands full with homework and projects, they are still in student mode, which means that their test-taking skills are much sharper now than they will be if they delay taking the GMAT for a few years.

Deferred enrolment

Regarding enrolment in a business school, Morgan says that there are several options. If you are really a high-performing person with lots of leadership experience, there are some programmes that you can apply to now and actually go to school in a couple of years after getting some professional experience (a practice known as deferred enrolment). The most prominent schools that offer this option are Harvard Business School and Stanford Graduate School of Business. These programmes are really competitive, so you have to have a good GMAT score and impressive academic achievements, but also professional and leadership experience to show that you are a rising star not just academically, but as a leader as well.

Masters in Management (MiM)

If you don’t plan to make use of deferred enrolment, Morgan says, you have a couple of options. If you want to go to school immediately after your graduation, you would be better off opting for a Masters in Management (MiM) programme rather than an MBA. The MiM is quite prominent in Europe and just gaining ground in the US. It is specifically designed for people coming straight from undergrad and is only one year long.

There are a couple of MBA programmes that accept students coming straight out of undergraduate education. However, Morgan advises against them, saying that having work experience before the MBA makes the programme much more valuable.

In the video, the tutor also answers questions from prospective students about applying for a US visa and recruitment opportunities for EMBA graduates. Sounds useful, does not it?
